Position Description – Assistant Camp Director
The Camp Committee's vision is that this position will serve as a support and resource to the Camp Director in leading the camp. Specific duties and tasks for this role will be determined by the Camp Director in consultation with the Assistant Camp Director, and as such, may change from year to year as different incumbents fill these positions.
Camp Committee also acknowledges that this position may not be filled each year, depending on the size of the camp, the availability of staff, and the experience of the Camp Director.
Objective:
To assist the Camp Director with the running of the camp. To ensure that CGIT Camp Kalalla operates safely and smoothly and follows the mission statement and Kalalla's philosophy of camping.
Qualifications:
- minimum 7 years experience in a leadership role as a camp staff member, preferably at Camp Kalalla.
- at least one summer at Kalalla as staff.
- ability to: take direction; work on a team; build consensus.
- excellent leadership and communication skills, understanding, ability to be a positive role model, enthusiasm, sense of humour, patience and self-control
- personality suitable to interact with novice counsellors, staff who need guidance and support
- desire and ability to work with young people outdoors
- St. John's or Red Cross Standard First Aid Course or equivalent
- experience in leading Christian worship
Duties:
The Camp Director, in consultation with the Assistant Camp Director, will determine the division of duties for the duration of the camp session. The following are always expectations of the Assistant Camp Director, except where it is indicated that these will occur on an "as needed" basis.
Before Camp ( in city)
- carefully review all requirements of the day-to-day expectations of the Camp Director well before arriving at camp
- be familiar with Camp Kalalla's staff manual prior to pre-camp
- be familiar with OCA guidelines and Quebec provincial standards
- assist Camp Committee/Staff Committee in the recruiting and hiring of staff, as needed
- work with Registrar, Camp Director, and Staffing Committee to assign staff and campers to units, as needed
- assist the Camp Director in the planning of pre-camp training (Team Building and Procedures), as needed
- attend Camp Kalalla's pre-camp training (i.e. staff training weekend and any other training provided)
- participate in other pre-camp leadership and skills training, as required
- be familiar with the crisis emergency response plan
- read and be familiar with the Discovery Time material in order to be able to assist and advise counsellors
Pre-camp at Kalalla (Staff Training)
- Participate in all pre-camp activities
- lead training as needed
- subscribe to the "Code of Professional and Business Ethics for OCA members"
During Camp
- assist Camp Director as needed
- ensure, with Camp Director, all policies and procedures are followed
- Lead, plan and run programs/activities (as determined with Camp Director prior to camp)
- be an active and visible presence in the camp, setting an example of commitment, excellence and caring
- assist Camp Director in providing ongoing support to staff
- assist with ongoing staff feedback and evaluation, both oral and written
- provide in service training when necessary
Post Camp
- assist with oral and written evaluations of camp staff, and the final written evaluation to Camp Committee
- help to organize and participate in post-camp activities as needed
- ensure all follow-up regarding campers and staff is completed
- provide a written report of their experience as Assistant Camp Director to Camp Committee for its September meeting
Reporting to: Camp Director (who reports to Camp Committee Chair, who in turn reports to CGIT Main Committee Chair)
