Position Description – Leader in Training (LIT) Director
Objective or Purpose:
To provide opportunities for potential future staff/leaders to grow in knowledge, skills and experience while preparing for an active leadership role at camp.
To challenge and encourage LITs to strive for spiritual and personal excellence through the use of team building activities, camping skill instruction, Bible exploration, personality styles knowledge, problem solving strategies, goal setting and evaluation, as well as practical experience with campers.
Qualifications:
- 5 years related experience
- at least one year at Kalalla in some capacity
- experience and ability to work with young people outdoors
- excellent communication skills
- St. John's or Red Cross Standard First Aid Course or equivalent
- Some experience in leading Christian worship, in facilitating and leading Discovery Time
Duties:
Pre camp (in city)
- consult Kalalla's LIT Director manual prior to precamp
- conduct interviews of potential candidates in May
- assist in developing LIT program, with help of the LIT manual and committee members
- NOTE: Manuals from previous years are available; the form of the program will depend largely upon the coordinator's teaching style and the needs of the LITs, as revealed through their application process.
- Prepare resources such as the LIT manual for each girl, prepare and mail letters of introduction, gather and purchase supplies for special activities
- Contact any guest speakers or resource people you wish to supplement the LIT program
- Organize training for pre-camp training (LITs arrive the day before campers)
Pre-camp at Kalalla (Staff Training)
- review policies and procedures with LITs, emphasizing their importance in keeping the camp safe and healthy
- welcome LITs and meet parents; assist LITs in setting up
- begin training with LITs before campers arrive
During camp
- initiate introductions and provide program purpose, overview & goals
- help LITs define and develop individual goals and objectives
- provide guidance in learning or improving hard and soft skills
- provide and lead/facilitate structured lessons, i.e. discussions and hands-on activities
- lead/facilitate spiritual development sessions/Discovery Time
- lead/facilitate various leadership development sessions throughout the program
- guide self-evaluation of LITs and provide verbal and written evaluation of LITs; written evaluations will be given at the midpoint and end of camp (copies of evaluation to be sent to camp committee and kept on file)
- provide ongoing support in the process of maturing from camper to staff
- assist with development of independence and responsibility
- consult with other staff to determine progress and performance of LITs and collect staff evaluations of LITs
- set up a schedule for LIT participation within units and outline responsibilities for these times
It is critical to take some time to simply "play" and do team-building with the LITs in order to keep the program fun and the team strong
Post camp
- prepare report with recommendations for next year
- ensure LIT evaluations have been sent to Camp Committee Chair
- Ensure a copy of the LIT manual or resources are compiled for next year
